Text Box: As the new year approaches, we are facing not just a financial crisis but also an economic shift. Along with economic revolution, the structure of business is also changing. While large corporations are folding, other large corporations are picking up the pieces and getting even larger. In the meantime, multitudes of people suddenly face life as an ex-employee. While some will continue to look for work, others will take a leap of empowerment.

The baby-boom generation is tired of long hours and fixed salaries. With technology at our fingertips and years of experience behind us, we prepare for transmission of a new wave of knowledge. More people will become self-employed. More business will take place over the Internet. The modern entrepreneur will create a mix of revenue streams, some based on business experience and others based on hobbies and interests.

Though many companies will survive the economic shift and many people will still be employees, the mix is changing. What will also change is corporate culture. Companies that thrive will place their employees high on the care list; allowing not only benefits and profit-sharing but also participation in company decision-making. New organizations will develop that coordinate the efforts of entrepreneurs. Coordinated groupthink is a business model that will grow exponentially over the next few years.

The basis of this economic shift is the switch from the standard pyramid structure to the inverted pyramid. The most important roles in an organization belong to those that directly provide the service or product that the customer pays for. Everything else in an organization exists to support the front line and the fulfillment of business objectives. There is still need for management and group coordination, but managers should be perceived as providing a service rather than giving orders. The roles of coach and mentor provide much better results than rulers and dictators.

On a global basis we witness this shift at the highest levels. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama replaces George Bush in the White House. The most visible leadership role in the world has now been granted to a motivator and provider. Unlike George Bush, who operated a military-designed pyramid structure where the leader is king, Barack Obama steps into an inverted pyramid structure where the prime goal is to empower the people. Tremors of this shift are already being felt.

Supporting these changes is a new wave of youthful energy. The children of the revolution are coming of age. They want to change the world as much as we do; now they are gaining the tools. A new culture of humanity is developing, mixing all races and religions into one happy community. It is happening in cities around the world, where people of different origin live as neighbors. It is happening in the schools, where children of all cultures sit in the same classrooms. It is happening on the internet, where new levels of communication connect the world. As the influence of youth gains power, the culture of humanity will change.

These are exciting times. While there may be concern about the future, there is also tremendous potential. Opportunities exist for those willing to rethink their approach; thinking outside the box only begins to suggest the alterations that we can anticipate. Each of us has tremendous creative power and the energy of change is upon us. Have fun!
