Text Box: When effort and energy are put into manifestation, it is critical to have goals. If goals have been defined, it is quite simple to ensure that activities lead towards those goals. If goals have not been defined, then efforts are haphazard and may not lead to anything.

The concept of SMART goals implies that goal definitions should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Sensitive. If the defined goal meets these standards, it becomes easy to evaluate success. The purpose of SMART goals is to increase the chances of a specific target being reached. Otherwise, efforts may flounder.

The problem with SMART goals is that the definition itself precludes the setting of big picture objectives. If one chooses a goal with lofty scope, it is likely perceived as unrealistic and unachievable, and is therefore discarded. The biggest problem is that the resolution of any real issue faced by the world is seen as too lofty, and therefore efforts are redirected.

In most of my thoughts, writings and activities, I have decided to set lofty goals. While I realize the definition of these goals does not fit the SMART standards, I believe that setting lofty goals help to direct efforts. Once lofty goals have been established, it becomes simple to deduce if smaller projects are leading towards the goals or not.

In my current campaign to be Mayor of Toronto, I have set three very lofty goals. These goals are to end poverty, to save the planet, and to change how government operates. Each of these goals leads to the betterment of society and the salvation of humanity. While the specific steps towards these goals are not apparent, any step can be measured against these parameters. The key is to ensure that visionary goals have positive intent.

To be realistic, I do not think that these goals can be achieved overnight. However, as guiding principles, they truly help in defining effort. Whenever a project or goal is proposed, we now have guidelines to determine if the project is successful. Does a project improve or harm the environment? If it harms the environment then it should be discarded, even if there are other benefits. Does a project lead towards prosperity for all? If not, it should be discarded, even if it would make rich people richer.

Do not be afraid to have a big vision. Do not be afraid to have lofty goals. The only time that a goal becomes truly unachievable is when we give up. Until then, every step can lead towards fulfillment of a vision and the betterment of mankind.
