Text Box: When animals appear in our lives, important messages can be divulged. Each creature carries its own wisdom. Through observation of the habits and tactics of another species, we can apply their wisdom to our own way of life. By learning about the character of another creature, we project upon it the characteristics that we wish to emphasize within ourselves.

A few weeks ago three crows visited me. I was sleeping in a cabin near a familiar lake and was woken by extreme bird sounds. When I went outside there was a large crow on the roof of the cabin, cheerfully stating his opinion. On a branch nearby were two other crows having a face-to-face discussion. As the sunrise turned into day, the three crows flew away. Since then crow has visited me numerous times.

Last weekend, I was camping in the backyard of a friend’s house near a beach. In the middle of the night, I woke up in my tent with a wolf licking my face. I patted her and she lay down beside me, cuddling into the spoon position. She growled with contentment as our bodies connected and I fell back into sleep.

This was not a dream. My friend’s dog is three-quarters Alaskan Huskie and one-quarter Timber Wolf. Her silhouette shows the outline of wolf. She is also one of the most affectionate creatures that I have encountered. What I found most interesting was the feeling of familiarity when I recognized the symbolic wolf in my tent. I feel blessed to be empowered with the medicine of wolf and crow.

Crow medicine symbolizes magical transformation. Crow is a shape-shifter and can easily navigate through chaotic change. In a volatile world the energies of crow and raven combine to bring us hope. In order for the world to shift, things must be shaken up a bit. The real question is where everything will land.

Wolf medicine symbolizes strength within a group that enhances combined energy by encouraging individuality. Wolf is the teacher, bringing new ideas into the clan after personal exploration. Wolf represents feminine strength, using intuition and moon energy to serve the group. Wolves have a strong link with family, both genetic and spiritual.

This is a special time in the growth of humanity. As the 2008 Olympics opened in China, war began between Russia and Georgia. The leaders of the world were all in one place at the same time and some important decisions were made. As the world moves towards the Olympic ideal of ‘One world, One dream’, the masses are preparing to set some guidelines about what that really means.

Like a giant board game, all the pieces are in place. Russia is justly defending people who were first attacked by the Georgians for desiring their own path. Georgia has the backing of the United States and the European Union. Iran sits quietly to the south, well prepared for defense if necessary and friendly to Russia. American troops populate Iraq and Afghanistan. Superpowers China and India watch carefully.

To the east, Turkey commands NATO’s second-largest military and sits in readiness. In Turkish mythology, a she-wolf named Asena discovered a human child, the only living creature in a village slaughtered by Chinese soldiers. The wolf raised the child as her own and an offspring developed, half-wolf and half-human. From this legend the Turkish nation developed, forever connected to the wolf. Not many creatures are foolish enough to attack a pack of wolves. Turkey is allied with the European Union and the United States.

If that is not enough, the battle between Christianity and Islam is shaping up. Crusaders from the north could initiate the long predicted holy war. The flag of Georgia is a proclamation of Christianity, with a white field containing one large red cross surrounded by four smaller red crosses. The Georgian coat of arms shows St. George slaying a dragon, supported by two powerful lions. As Georgia receives military support from its allies and forces build up, the Islamic world may recognize the positioning moves of western powers and react accordingly.

Meanwhile, the largest nation in the world hosts the Olympics. The Olympic spirit represents our ideal standard, promoting a world where peaceful nations strive to do their best, agreeing to rules that allow fairness and prosperity for all. Just like the wolves, we celebrate together as one family, encouraging the uniqueness of each individual who contributes to the strength of the group. Just like the crows, shifting and adapting as the world changes around us and influencing change with our magic. By focusing on the ideal world of friendship, freedom and mutual support the rest of the world may just fall into place. Before there is order there must be chaos. The next few weeks will be very interesting.
