Text Box: A few years ago, I met a Buddhist monk named ‘Bhanti’, which means ‘spiritual friend’. Throughout an evening of discussion and education, a group of us were taught how to ‘walk like a monk’. The objective was to walk very slowly, taking one step for each breath in, and one step for each breath out. If you do this while breathing at a relaxed pace, the result is slow continuous movement.

While we were doing the exercise, we learned that the goal of getting somewhere was irrelevant in the moment. Instead, as we slowly moved along, we began to look around, seeing what was in our surroundings, observing everything around us. By taking away the need to get somewhere, we learned more about where we actually were.

Lately, I have come to the realization that speed was not the issue. Though the exercise of walking like a monk required us to slow down and look around, what we were really achieving was a higher level of awareness. Suddenly, everything in the world became important and beautiful. Suddenly, with the eyes of a child, everything became fascinating.

Learning how to perceive the world with enhanced awareness takes practice. First you must learn how to achieve a higher level of awareness when alone. Though this can be achieved through a variety of means, the end goal is to experience a calm aware mind and enhanced physical awareness, no matter what the method. I happen to use a combination of meditation, tai chi, Falun Gong and Reiki to get into the zone.

Once you have learned the basics of enhanced vibration, the next step is to address the personal emotions, feelings and habits that can pull you out of that vibration. Becoming aware of how you react to various stimuli not only helps increase self-knowledge, but also allows you to minimize the effects of emotional triggers. It is not necessary to become an unfeeling person in order to eliminate disharmonious emotions.

After you have begun to learn about yourself and how to manage your vibration, the next step is to maintain that vibration in public. When people are around there are a variety of distractions, and interactions can push buttons. Maintaining a high vibration can be a challenge, even during the simple act of walking through a mall. It can become necessary to continuously remind yourself to get back into high vibration. Even a few moments away from focus can lead to distraction and a lower vibration.

The final phase of heightened awareness is to be in high vibration at all times, during all interactions. To see your self as a source of light, and to see all other beings as creatures of love and beauty may take practice, but it certainly is worth it.
