I proudly trace my lineage through the Stewart Clan. Stewart is my middle name; it is my father's first name, and was my paternal grandmother's surname. I do not intend to consolidate all of the information available on the clan. Instead, I will simply provide some links. However, first are some interesting discoveries:
A Norman knight, William Fitz Alain became the hereditary Great Steward of Scotland during the reign of David I. His descendants used the named 'Stewart'.
When the Stewart clan expanded into France, the French alphabet did not have the letter 'W', so the spelling 'Stuart' was derived.
Robert the Bruce, depicted as the ally/opponent of William Wallace in 'Braveheart', became the first of the Stewart kings on March 27, 1306.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was the first female heir to the Stewart crown. She was also the Queen of France by her marriage to King Francis II. When she tried to replace Elizabeth I as the Queen of England in 1587, she lost her head.
King James VI, the son of Mary, commissioned the authorized version of the King James Bible.
King James VII, another Stewart, was driven from England in 1688 for his Catholic beliefs.
The Jacobites were the followers of the claim of King James VII to the Throne of the United Kingdom. They took their name from the Latin from James which is Jacobus.
James' grandson, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, led a Jacobite uprising in 1745, returning to England to take back the throne. He didn't succeed.
Prince Charles, the current Prince of Wales, is also the High Steward of Scotland as a female-line descendent from William Fitz Alain.
