Text Box: What does Santa Claus have in common with a mayoral candidate? What is the similarity between a business analyst and a shiatsu therapist? What do an artist, writer and shamanic drummer have in common with an accountant and software developer? The answer is that these are all experiences that I have had over the past twelve months.

The buffet of life contains many choices. From the food we eat to the books we read, from the activities we undertake to the people we spend time with, every aspect of life has more choices than we can expect to experience. While I hesitate to use the word impossible, imagine trying to read every book ever written. Imagine trying to visit every country, see every painting, or listen to every song. In order to experience the choices that we really want to experience, we must be selective.

When we make a choice of where to focus our energy, we are usually foregoing other opportunities. When we choose which movie to watch, we have eliminated all other movies. If we decide to watch a movie, we have chosen not to do any other activity for that time period. While our choices may have minimal impact in the moment, over the course of our lifetime the sum of our experiences is dictated by our choices.

Sometimes the hardest decision in life is what to do next. While there are often obligations or commitments that must be fulfilled, at other times life is like a blank page, waiting for us to start writing. Our creative capabilities are limited more by our internal censors than by external forces, and in many situations nothing holds us back except ourselves.

Once you realize that there are unlimited choices to make, what matters most is personal desire. The concept of ‘following your excitement’ means that your choices are better made if they follow your greatest interests. Why eat food that you don’t like when there are so many other things to eat? Why watch a movie that doesn’t interest you when there are thousands of other choices? While of course some choices are made because of obligations or feelings of duty, the reality is that there are often better choices to make to achieve desired outcomes.

When surfing the waves of quantum reality, it is important to remember that anything is possible. However, it is just as important to recognize the flow of energy within which you are playing. Sometimes it is easier to follow choices that are readily available rather than trying to change things. Sometimes it is easier to step into an opportunity than it is to create one. However, ultimately it is your desire for creation that dictates the outcome.

As I sit here thinking of my next career move, what drives me most is a desire to change the world. However, I also realize that major change is not just up to me. While there are many aspects of humanity that disturb me, there are also many aspects that are wonderful. By attaching to what I like, it is easier to create change than by fighting what I don’t like. It is easier to influence energy that is already flowing than to alter or redirect energy that is undesired. While sometimes we want to bring light to the darkness, the best strategy may be to add brightness to light that already exists.
