Text Box: As of January 26, 2009, we have entered the Year of the Earth Ox. According to lunar charts followed by many Asian cultures, there are twelve years and five elements which combine into a repetitive sixty-year cycle. Since the Western calendar is based on the solar cycle, lunar New Year occurs on a different day each year. The Year of Earth Ox continues until February 13, 2010.

The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. The Ox is calm, dependable, patient and hardworking. The Ox can also be stubborn, narrow-minded, materialistic and demanding. In the year of the Ox the greatest strides will be made by those who focus on specific and repetitive action. While other years may allow manifestation through expectations, this year requires focused activity in order to create what you want.

Earth is the central balance of the five elements; the others being wood, fire, water and metal. It is a year affected by all previous years; a year that affects all future years as well. In 2009, whatever we happen to create will have repercussions throughout our lifetime. Since earth is the core essence of our being it helps tremendously to stay ‘grounded’ and stable in your efforts.

2009 is an Ox year that will have the Yin influence. Yin symbolizes feminine aspects such as compassion, kindness, gentleness and patience. Of course men can have these characteristics as well, but when they do they are said to be displaying their feminine side. This year it is important for all beings to care for each other as well as caring for themselves. While yang energy is noted for being forthright and solo, yin energy grows best in group situations. Throughout the year we will have many opportunities to bond with others and create something special.

While the current cycle defines this year as an Earth year, Ox is regularly associated with the element water. What do you get when you mix earth and water? Mud. This year may be slow and bogged down for some. Of course both earth and water are necessary elements of fertile soil, signifying an environment that allows for strong and rapid growth. Whether you personally are stuck in the mud or growing exponentially is up to you.

Coincidentally (are there really any coincidences?), Barack Obama was born in 1961, another Ox year. As humanity attempts to change direction, a leader who is both steadfast and compassionate touches the roots of our souls. In the past couple of weeks many have rekindled hope. The change indicated by the election of a negro to lead the United States was unexpected even a couple of years ago; the acceptance of a person as a human being regardless of skin color is a necessary step in our evolution. So far, Barack has displayed values that are sorely needed in the upper ranks of government.

The year of the Ox presents opportunities for individuals and for humanity as a whole. Step by step, stride by stride, we move towards our goals. With strength and determination we create our future; with patience and exhilaration we shape each moment as we move towards common goals. May your year be happy and successful!
